The Bigapixel Experiment

A few weeks ago I came across a site called Extreme Resolution which used the Google Maps API to display gigapixel images. While their site was more about the massive panorama technology using very expensive computerized mounts, I was more impressed by their use of the Google Maps API to display their massive images.

Because I have had some Google Maps mash-up experience of my own, I figured I'd give it a stab and try to accomplish this kind of image viewer on my own. Because my panoramas are somewhere between megapixels and gigapixels, I thought I'd create a term for large images somewhere in between, and this was born the Bigapixel Experiment.

Have a look and see what you think. Its not very polished at this point, and I am aware there are other, better tools for this, it was a great learning experience.
